The material is, usually, out of copyright, i.e. the composer has been dead for at least 70 years and the edition of the work was published more than 25 years ago. Some material published on some of these sites may infringe these UK copyright rules. BEWARE and if in doubt, DON'T DOWNLOAD!
Alternatively, some material is available on these sites because a living composer and/or editor permit free sharing of their work. This is most clearly the case when reference is made to a Creative Commons (CC) copyright license. It is safe to download when you see reference to a CC licence.
